There are fifteen historical towns along
Route 120 – The Pioneer Way
(Great Southern Highway)
which follows the Great Southern Railway as it travels
from Northam to Albany on our stunning south coast.

Some smaller – some larger but each of the towns has historical and heritage significance as each come into being through the intrepid early European pioneers and the coming of the railway.

These pioneers, many of whom had come from overseas, left the comfort of Perth and Albany to venture into a vast and empty wilderness. Except for a few waterholes and the curious Aboriginal population there were no facilities and no roads whatsoever. They set up camp and cleared farms for crops and livestock in often harsh conditions.

Towns started to develop along the Great Southern Railway as the line stretch further north from Albany and south from Beverley until finally meeting at what is now Katanning.

Today, the Great Southern Highway is a modern two-lane sealed highway providing a safe and comfortable journey along its entire length. There are plenty of places to pull over for a rest or for photo opportunities. Your kids and pets can get out safely and stretch their legs and take in the fresh country air.

If you’re towing a caravan there’s plenty of caravan parks and layovers along the way and most of the towns are RV Friendly. This means you can stay overnight or for as long as you like as you investigate what each town has to offer you.

Each town, large and small, has something to offer tourists and holiday makers. And you will find it a far more relaxing drive than the truck congested Albany Highway. So do yourself a favour and travel the Pioneer Way to your southern destination.
